Puerto Rican officials try to legalize marijuana

Roughly 24% of the inmates in Puerto Rico are there because of drug charges. Now, the former health secretary wants to try to reform Puerto Rican cannabis laws, and let some of those innocent people out of jail.

Under the plan, marijuana would be taxed as liquor and tobacco are now, with proceeds going toward drug-treatment programs, said former Health Secretary Enrique Vazquez Quintana. “The fight against drugs, using punishment, has not worked,” said Jose Manuel Saldana, former president of the University of Puerto Rico. “This is a social reality”.

Even though we have progressive-spirited people all over the world, this plan probably won’t go through any time soon. Lawmakers have said they are open to discussing the legalization of marijuana, but only for medical purposes. This is obviously a great first step, but maybe they should have a debate as to why liquor is legal and cannabis is not, without the spin, made-up facts and other bullshit out there.
